Women writing about their work in their blogs is actually a very interesting response to this. It's a way of getting your work out there to the public, but also to the attention of your colleagues and just saying "Hey, I just wrote this interesting paper", "Hey, I'm working on this interesting work." It's a kind of end run around the citation system, but also a way of bolstering your cite-ability.
